In 1974 in Memphis, Tennessee, the Amazing Rhythm Aces were formed. Founding members bassist Jeff Davis and drummer Butch McDade enlisted vocalist/ guitarist Russell Smith, keyboardist Billy Earhart III, dobro player Barry Burton, and pianist James Hooker to develop a Pop – Country – Blue Eyed Soul sound.
The Aces debut album appeared in 1975 entitled, ‘Stacked Deck,’ which included the hits "Third Rate Romance" and "Amazing Grace (Used to Be Her Favorite Song)."
A year later, the band went on to win the grammy for Country Vocal Performance By A Group for the single, ‘The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)’
Burton left the group in 1977 after the release of ‘Tucan Do It Too,’ and was replaced by Duncan Cameron. In 1978, the Aces released ‘Burning The Ballroom Down,’ followed by a self-titled effort a year later. Their final released record was ‘How the Hell Do You Spell Rhythum’, before disbanding.
