Synopsis
The three members were barely out of their teens when, in 1972, they became a musical phenomenon, scoring number one hits and being awarded a Grammy for best new musical artist. Indeed, “A Horse with No Name"" became a major worldwide hit in early 1972, selling over one million copies. Their debut album, which up to that point had been unsuccessful, was re-released, with the hit song added, and quickly went platinum. The album spawned a second major chart success with ""I Need You"", which peaked at #9 on the U.S. charts. Soon after the trio relocated to Los Angeles, California. In 1974 America secured the services of producer George Martin, and sound engineer Geoff Emerick. Martin and Emerick had hitherto played a major role in shaping the sound of the Beatles. Sessions took place at George Martin’s AIR Studios in London, England and on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. Martin ended up producing seven of their albums.
Dan Peek quit the group in 1977, but Beckley and Bunnell sustained America as a duo. Continuing to tour – often performing over one hundred shows a year – America maintains a loyal fan base.
