Synopsis

The landmark live album “Sister Midnight- Live At the Agora” was recorded in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 21st, 1977, part of lggy Pop’s three night stand at this venue. In 1976, after the messy breakup of his band The Stooges, lggy Pop’s recording career was in a bit of a slump. David Bowie, his friend and aficionado, offered to lend him a helping hand by producing “The Idiot”, his debut solo album. lggy was savvy and grateful enough to thankfully accept. Once the record was in the can lggy set up a tour in support of the release, for which David recruited the musicians, and even agreed as a further favour to play keyboards in this backing band.

Naturally Bowie’s presence insured a much larger audience than Pop had attracted during the final bleak days of his previous band. lggy resolutely set out to prove he could perform an exciting show and entertain his fans without deteriorating into a drug-addled heap of on-stage misery, as had previously often been the case with The Stooges. With fine voice, singing with a sense of control and dynamics, and at a time when he had so much to prove, lggy left no doubt that he was a solid singer and electrifying frontman.

Nine of the twelve tracks here are drawn from the Stooges’ repertoire. Guitarist Ricky Gardiner is every bit as skilful as say Ron Asheton or James Williamson, while Hunt Sales on drums, and Tony Sales on bass, are a solid rhythm section that feeds lggy with the energy he needs to be uniquely “lggy”. Bowie’s playing provides the proverbial icing on the cake, and gives a new dimension and colour to songs you were previously accustomed to hearing without keyboards.

“Sister Midnight - Live At the Agora” captured an important moment in the history of popular music and will not only appeal to determined collectors of all things “lggy & Ziggy”, but to all fans of electrifying in-your-face Rock & Roll.
