Synopsis
The original line-up of the English-American West Coast soft-rock band, America, consisted of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek. Offsprings of American dads and British mums, their fathers being military personnel stationed at the United States Air Force base at RAF West Ruislip, London, all three attended London Central High School at Bushey Hall, about 16 miles Northwest of London in the mid-1960s, where they met while playing in different bands. The three began making music together, eventually calling themselves America, in honour of the name of the homeland they had hardly ever seen during their travels around the world. They developed a style, which incorporated vocal harmonies with folk-rock, not unlike Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The three members were barely out of their teens when, in 1972, they became a musical phenomenon, scoring number one hits and being awarded a Grammy for best new musical artist. Indeed, “A Horse With No Name” became a major worldwide hit in early 1972, selling over one million copies. Their debut album, which up to that point had been unsuccessful, was rereleased, with the hit song added, and quickly went platinum. The album spawned a second major chart success with “I Need You”, which peaked at #9 on the U.S. charts. Soon after the trio relocated to Los Angeles, California.....(Full notes on sleeve)
